It was a pretty busy March, so much so that there was little blogging time. Oh well, that is what happens when your s t r e t c h e d. I will make a better effort this month to keep the latest coming...
Check it out... what one of the designers I work with Zusette has created in her display suites.
Zusette used Tilano Captain Brown Chalkboard Paint to create the perfect back drop to the meals of the day! It simply helps to set the mood. Simple and effective.
Captain Brown even works as the perfect back drop to a doggy stencil for this boys room feature wall.

Where does the time go... here it is March 16th already...and I have not made a post since March 5.
Busy in the creative industry I work in can take me away from the day-to-day.
Blogging is one of them, I have the intent to make an entry and the idea of what I would like to share, but the crazy pace of decorative artist life in this wacky economy is just that - wacky. There seems to be less time? A recession? Does it not mean we should have more time available?
Back the business, had last minute call for a display suite last week and I had Tilano Chalkboard paints to the rescue again. Luckily, this designer was open the same design as the last. Therefore I was able to use Confetti White with a warm silver metallic glaze to pull the project together pronto and to a completion.
Here's where it started and finished.
As I mentioned before, I'm pleasantly surprised at the strength of the Chalkpaints from Tilano, they stick very well to just about anything, they dry fast and you can use left overs from craft projects on real projects for home decorating.
Take it beyond the expected...

Ever wonder what a photo transfer would look like if you were to place it on to real Marmorino Lime Plaster?
Propably not, that's ok, since it's my job to think "what would it look like if....". Thus I try transferring photos on a variety of surfaces.
This is one I have never tried?
Lime Plaster - I'm going to give it a try and see what happens.
Lime Plaster is an organic product I use for a variety of wall finishes, counter tops and mantles for my interior decorating biz here in Vancouver - Distinct Interiors. Since I have a bunch of left over material from recent jobs I'm going to try out some transfer on the Lime Plaster.
I love working with organic materials and much like wood, Lime Plaster has a wonderful tactile presence to it. As you build your layers of plaster, the limestone in the product begins to come to life, with incredible results as the plaster dries and turns back into stone.

What do they have in common?
I was surprised today when I delivered another shipment of Chalkboard Paint to Van Gogh Art School. Kathy the founder, had wasted no time in getting children classes going.
This was a grade one glass making Valentines Mirrors, using red and pink paint! Perfect. Now that is a good idea for Oh la la Red and Sweet Sixteen Pink, combine the two and your right in fashion for February. You could use a stencil right on top of the Chalkpaint or right with chalk - you decide your the artist.

I was searching through some pictures... and came across a photo shoot we did a while back. It reminded me that you can have some fun with transfers you create. The idea came from a Martha Stewart segment or a show like that, where she would put a picture under a glass as a marker for the dinning guest setting.
Of course the marble coasters work well as custom coasters, but the glass tiles have something a little more special when it comes to looking a contemporary. I always find people tend to gravitate to them and pick them, they are distinctly different.

Question: Do I have time still to make a Tilano Davinci Tile before Christmas?
Answers:
Of course there is still time to make a very thought filled gift. I have been receiving some calls about the how-to make our kits (which
always happens at this time of the year, "...got to get it done!"),
therefore I thought I should re post some of the videos to help you
out.
I know I can't speak to everyone and answer the questions
that arise along the way, but watching a video before you start your
kit,... it should help with some of the questions.

If You Do
Then here is one of the easiest ornaments you can create. Make your own family picture glass 2"x2" Tilano ornaments. My wife and I were opening up some boxes of decorations for the house and I came across this ornament we received as a gift from the Cerjacks, last year.
Funny, how others make or create something for you and it turns out to be what you had done the year before.
Since I gave the ornaments to my family 2 years ago. They make for a great little time capsule, reminding you of just how fast the year goes by!
Just transfer your image onto the back of the 2"x2" glass and your done. Piece of cake!
They look terrific next to the lights.

Thinking 'outside' of the box and where the heart is...
Thanks so much to Tricia Ribble for sending in your photo. Truly a unique way of using the coasters to make a stylish contemporary sign, perfect for the season and pretty much every season.
Tricia was smart to transfer on letters to the marble(very resourceful), then make a wooden frame to house them. A little decorative arrangement of dried flowers and there you have it!

Before
Hey I'm on a roll! Another Jones fresco tile install for their home (one of clients), it is Part III to what I consider, every room has potential for some type of creative transfer. Here above the mantle in the living room, I used the Tilano Fresco 8"x8" tiles ( a total of ten) to make a large mosaic - simply took a random pick of their family photos and made a fun mix, why not!

The Before
Here is what I made for the Jones home (one of clients), it is Part II to what I consider, every room has potential for some type of creative transfer. In this case I used the Tilano Fresco 8"x8" tiles to make a larger mosaic of their baby girl Anna Belle. I like the way it turn out!

Something old is new
Do you have old photos just hanging around? Why not do something with them. That's what I love to see - something different. Take a photo from yesteryear and turn it into something for this year! Transfer it and share it. Let's see what ya got. Email me your creation and I will share it with our Tilano community.
PS - the photos above were transferred onto marble 4"x4" and 8"x8"

Yesterday I spoke to the potential that every wall, everywhere - has the potential for a creative accent.
Thus here are six Fresco tiles I made for the Jones Family stair case wall. I used pictures of their little boy and girl when they where toddlers to make transfers for the Fresco tiles.

Every Wall - Everywhere
Do you see the potential for a creative accent to a wall otherwise know just as - well, a wall?
Tomorrow I will show you what six Fresco Tiles could look like if you were to transfer on to them.

Well, geometric diamonds are forever, especially when they are made of Tadelakt plaster on your walls.
Here is what I have been working on this week from 9 to 5, and continuing from my post on Oct 24. I have almost finished my lime plaster wall creation. As with most creative projects the outcome is different from the original design with the designer. Mostly due to the age of the home, it was built in 1910, therefore as time has moved, so have the walls - what joy when you are trying to layout a diamond grid point-to-point!
Laying on my top coat over my diamond grid relief stencil, every diamond had to have it's own custom measurement. Excellent!
Once the plaster dried out (over night) I came back to glaze in the accent glaze with olive oil.
Of course you don't have to place plaster on walls alone, why not try a journal? Much like these three I found on Granville street today. Plaster, diamond grids and a journal - brilliant! Funny how when you start a creative journey there are many coincidences.

setting up shop for another project
This is my desk top.
It might look like work to some - but I feel 'I'm paid to play' - this is when you know work is a labour of love. I'm invited into homes to help create custom interior finishes that reflect the desires of the home owners. The most common phrase I hear is "I would like my room to feel..." and that's how the creative journey starts. We create a custom wall finish together.
For this project, I'm creating three different wall finishes. Venetian Plaster for the living room, Tadelakt walls for the dining room and a very cool Tadelakt finish in the powder room. I can't wait to see how this one turns out. By the way, these are all true organic fresco finishes, there are no finer lime plasters in the world - and of course they come from Italy. Eccellente!
I really enjoy the challenge to create something from nothing. There is no reference, just discussions with the designer and the home owners, and then the rest is up to me, yikes! I will keep you posted to the progress in the week ahead.
Maybe Tilano should look at some of these lime plasters.

When I was at the home show this past weekend and met Abby from Kermodi, it reminded me of how much people generally love and enjoy plants. Of course there are plenty of advantages to going green at home and in the work place. You may have a favorite photo or painting of a flower in just the right setting. But what would it look like on a fresco tile or a marble coaster? Hmm...
Make a Masterpiece
1. Choose an image that you would like to transfer.
2. In this case, I used a great old world painting of a plant (it was written in Latin, thus I don't know the name ;)
3. I used 12 8"x8" fresco tiles by Tilano to create the larger than life work of art.
Make a smaller Masterpiece
1. Choose an image that you would like to transfer.
2. I used the same image the old world painting of a plant (it was written in Latin, thus I don't know the name - STILL ;)
3. I used 4 4"x4" marble coasters by Tilano to create the larger than life work of art.
